Puppetry Development Consortium

Puppetry Development Consortium

From November to January I have been involved with the Puppet Centre Trusts project
Working together to Strengthen Puppetry  with the Puppetry Development Steering Group.

It has been inspiring and fascinating to meet the people involved:

Sue Buckmaster- Artistic Director of Theatre Rites
Joy Haynes- Director of the Norwich Puppet Theatre
Slavka Jovanovic- Head of Education and interim Artistic Director of the Little Angel
Eddie Berg- Head of the British Film Institute

The Puppetry Development Steering Group was brought together by the Puppet Centre Trust to discuss ways we could “Strengthen Puppetry together”. After five consultation meetings with various other creative sectors like Circus, StreetTheatre and Animation we concluded that something that could benefit our industry was better

  • Leadership & Advocacy
  • Talent Development
  • Audience Development

Agreed upon this we set about putting together another Grant For The Arts Application to commit to a year of meetings with a selected group of Puppetry Practitioners from all over England that could develop strategies and share ideas to improve on the above mentioned criteria. I am representing Puppet Place in the Southwest as an Independent Puppetry Practitioner.

We have just received the news today that we have qualified for our Grant and will be carrying out these meetings. If you would like to know more about this process follow this link http://www.puppetcentre.org.uk/about/puppetry-consortium

NODA Summer school at Warwick University is where professionals teach amateur companies who want to polish or train in new skills.  Last year students requested a course in Puppetry.  As the puppetry tutor I spent a week teaching a group of 13 adults aged between 30-60 how to puppeteer. We started with the very basics of object manipulation proceeding to more sophisticated multi-person operated puppets. Students also learn about fabrication of very simple puppets for workshops with younger amateur youth groups. It was an intensive learning environment with a very dedicated group of students. We created a performance based on the skills they had developed to share as part of a showcase at the end of the week.

Smoking Puppet Cabaret 2013

Shambala Festival 2013

Oedipus in Boots performing at the Smoking Puppet Cabaret tent, Shambala Festival 2013.

Having curated and managed this years Puppetry tent at Shambala 2013, Corina Bona also performed with Blue blue Peter twice for the evening adult cabarets.

Our programme was fit to burst with appearances from The String Theatre’s Insect Circus; Finger & Thumb with their gobsmacking hand shadows;Croon Production with some moody retro comedy; ridiculous songs fromDark Squid’s musical Greedy Boy; puppet daredevils Noisy Oyster’s Dangerous Dave; and Mufti’s Hangman; and not forgetting the unhinged Headstrung Cabaret. Expect the surreal, shadows, shape-shifting, and laughter, plus a few surprises along the way as we flaunt puppetry’s seamy underbelly
